Downtime Apologies
May 28 2007, 08:44 PMThe server went down for roughly 15 minutes, and I apologize.
A search feature on a very large board created a run away process, causing an avalanch of requests and made the server freeze. It had to be shut down all the way and restarted.
This problem however, has been fixed and should not occur again.

Thats the largest board hosted on jcink.com, mostly consisting of spam. It's been causing some problems, and is was also suspected of others.

Aww thank you for saying that
Anyways, sorry if the board tends to have a bunch of members, we try to get more members daily. Most of the time we are probably the reason Jcink has so many problems, and a lot of my members don't complain about the board not working anymore. I can't really move it personally, if you wanted to get rid of us just put us onto something better or something that could stand the board, but not clog up Jcink service.
May 29 2007, 07:46 PM
I don't want to get rid of you, that'd be wrong. And hamlin, I didn't mention the URL or type publicly for a reason, it would be nice if you refrained from such comments.
It's not really you guy's fault at all. Getting members is what you're supposed to do. It's just mainly the fact that I'm a new host, we're having some growing pains.
The first problem was that you had some enemies unlike other forums, and I got denial of service attacks pretty much daily. I really don't know who they were, but I spent a long time writing and rewriting codes and hardening the system against attacks.
As time progressed though, the performance issues came along. I pulled the top 10 posters completely away from all forums, and the search.
It just so happens that your forum's size is causing me to fix some really badly coded areas of IPB. And I had to suspend the search on you because it was totally killing my host to search the half a million posts, I need to find time to rewrite the search engine so this can't happen, that's just a bigger problem. So far I've rewritten areas of the shoutbox, the personal messenger system, the moderation areas (Which were really badly designed), the entire backup system had to be rewritten, and a lot more.
If I had a second server to put you on, I'd probably do so, but I don't have one, so for now I need to just continue to fix IPB and the features that are resource intensive and disable what need be until it can be rewritten. It's nice to hear though that your members don't complain; I'm always worried of making you guys mad because I come to your site to probe at things all the time and check up on you when there are issues, and I tend to do that a lot.
Things are getting better and better though.
Anyway, don't worry about it, I just hope that I'm not making anyone mad...

*Hamlin shuts up now
May 29 2007, 07:58 PM
In fact, pretty much all day long today, I haven't received any emails about the system suffering. I set it up to email me a while back about whenever a process struggles. Needless to say, a lot of processes got reported to me over time, and I've been banging them out 1 by 1 over the past weeks to improve performance. Eventually there'll be a point where I'll never get them anymore.
This has actually helped JFB be more secure against DoS attacks, and will help future forums similar to yours. It just sucks for you that you had to be the first to take the brunt of these issues.
May 29 2007, 08:13 PM
My Members, lol they like idolize you. You've been there before, they were like oh **** its Jcink! That stuff made me laugh and all, and I was curious about why the search engine was offline, I tried to fix it myself but wasn't to sure about why it wasn't; so today I came here to see what was the matter.
Also, I know for a fact that my forum has given you a lot of problems, and long days. We really didn't have that many enemies to start out with, and all of this started whenever the forum finally got its legs. My members post a lot and on the shoutbox, they usually keep in contact, and we get a lot of look and leave accounts that I'm planning on deleting.
To stay out here, I would love to help you out whenever I'm not busy, I got a few coders on my site and a few scripters that wouldn't mind helping you out, and besides, your like king to them.
Is the board already paided for or will I have to pay some fees in a year or so? This is on your server correct? Meaning, I'll have to pay sometime if I'm thinking right.
May 29 2007, 08:33 PM
Ok. Yeah, I've noticed that too, but I just wasn't sure if you've been getting a massive amount of complaints to your inbox. I'll be online and someone will say "OMG, Jcink is online!" One of them even PMed me saying "Free, why are you using Jcink's account. XD." I guess some don't even believe it's me. I notice the box is massively active, and that was one thing that definitely needed a revamp (which I fixed). And thanks a lot for the offer on the coders too and the offer to help out... good to know if I really need to ask something to somebody there who does stuff I can.
And no, no fees will ever have to be paid. I do not plan to ever charge people for these boards, not in a year, not anytime.
I want to keep them all for free, and supported by just the google advertisements. Money is made per click on them, and that's how it works. This works out fine, so don't worry about me charging in the future. There may be premium services in the future, e.g., upgrading to 1GB disk storage for attachments, or something like that, but that's as far as it'll go.

Is there anyway to raise the board type? For example, I would like to get more mods on my board but I can't make new Dictionaries so I'm stuck with the stuff already installed. I wouldn't mind paying for that because technically I enjoy having mods on the board, new things that will keep the members excited and such. Is there anyway to change my Defualt Address to something else? Because when the board was registered I didn't know what I was using it for, and I would enjoy having it say naruto-sagas instead of freeto.
May 29 2007, 09:07 PM
Both questions are, for right now, the answer no. That might be stuff for the future too. The address thing will be definitely be something in the future.
I'm curious about this dictionary thing though, what do you mean by Dictionary feature exactly? Is that a mod available for other board types, or have you got an example you could show me? The main major upcoming things ive been looking at are to add an RPG mod, a gallery mod, and some other mods, but now I'm curious what this is.
May 29 2007, 10:08 PM
We have diconaires for each thing, theres a Uploads Dict., and a lot of other types. Its a branch off the main storage area if I'm thinking right.

Could you link me? I'm not sure I entirely understand, but...
May 29 2007, 10:56 PM
Sigh..I'm not to sure what I'm talking about right now. Its more like, we have the index and it goes into many ways, like index, and it has pathways to other storage areas.
May 29 2007, 11:00 PM
Do you mean something like 'storage' -- downloads storage? Like this:
http://support.b1.jcink.com/index.php?act=Downloads only arranged for dictionaries for things instead? or am I just way off base?
May 29 2007, 11:21 PM
Ever hosted on Photobucket? You have your main Album and many Sub Albums that lead back to your main album. That is what I"m talking about.
http://www.photobucket.com/
May 29 2007, 11:26 PM
Ah... so, if I have this right, you do want something like a gallery mod, which lets people add their own photos and have an index of their gallery? like photobucket does? If that ain't it, I'm way stumped, you'll have to be more specific heh sorry.
May 29 2007, 11:29 PM
Except for anything, every website/Server has it. If you go to Freewebs they have similar, you have the index and the folders where you can host different things.
May 29 2007, 11:33 PM
Ooooooooooooooooooh. You want web hosting then, I think. That's like a different service type entirely, I believe. I know some good servers dedicated to doing free web hosting if you want the links to them.
May 29 2007, 11:39 PM
Okay, each forum has one of these, I want to know how to CREATE a new one for personal use. For example, I want to create a new one to host a mod I found on some site.
Like this Mod v v

And you want access to those directories so you'll be able to install this. I was confused, you were saying dictionaries, you meant directories, heh. I see.
I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but it's pretty much impossible for me to give access to these files. One major reason is that IPB would fry me for doing so. I'm not allowed to let users have file and directory access to do things like that, it goes against the license for invision 1.3. This is why all the IPB hosts don't offer a way to install mods. Another problem is, the service runs from all one set of invision files. So even if I gave you access, there's only 1 set of files, all of your edits would show up on other people's forums, and the same as if I gave anyone else access. It'd be a disaster.
That's why I have the mod suggestion topic... which sadly I still haven't done either of the mods you requested, that being the IPB store add on and the bump mod. I'll try to get both of those done over the weekend. But really though, if you have mods that you want on your site, look on invisionize.com, and post them in "Mod Suggestion topic." I'll respond to it and install it if it's possible ASAP for you. It's pretty much impossible to allow you to do so yourself.
