Changing power supply[Cancelled]

Sep 18 2007, 03:39 PM

I plan to change the power supply unit to a new one tonight 12:00AM Friday, or later. To do this, the server has to be turned off and the power supply currently inside will be taken out and replaced with a fresh new one. I will keep you posted as to when this is complete, it should not take long.

Canceled as of 1:08 AM: We apologize but this had to be canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

    Nope.

    No content will be lost.

This has nothing to do with data; it's merely the little box that supplies power to things like the motherboard, the drives, the fan, etc.

    oh. thats great.

    BUT WHY???

  4. Jcink Says:

Well the power supply makes some occasional noises - not very good noises. Such as a loud "whirrrrr" of the fan. It's been doing it since March, actually. That's a sign of a failing power supply, I've had to happen to my other computers before. Lately though however it has been making that noise for about 60 seconds a day, then it stops.

The server is about a year and 3/4 old now, and it still has the same supply. Power supplies that run 24/7 tend to go quite quickly.

This isn't really a problem even right now - the current supply could go on for another month or longer for sure. But since I have a supply I'm looking to change it soon.

Also, I think I'm pushing this to Thursday or Friday late night... That's a better day for me, but we'll see.

no only invisionfree looses data >_>

    correct hamlin.

jcink, better to get it done before hand before it becomes a big problem.

  7. Seb Says:

Just out of curiosity, how long does that normally take?

  8. Jcink Says:

I really don't know. The setup for the power supply in the server seems a bit tricky than the desktops but I'm sure it's nothing too bad.
