Site revamps complete
Nov 8 2007, 02:43 AMFor the past month or so, I have been making some changes, which I'm sure most of you have seen. The main site and projects are now websites all on their own. The new sites are more user friendly, cleaner, and easier to navigate. They give every project its own due space to grow and attract users.
And finally, http://jcink.com are done being design revamped.
There are several highlights I'd like to point out that were done on the main site, those being "My Account", and the new wiki. First, we'll start with My Account. My Account is a new feature that lets you login with your email.
Here, you can manage your existing jcink.com services and other aspects of the site. By registering your services here, you can use this account as a master account or backup to reset passwords on all root accounts. If you have multiple services registered on Jcink.com, having a master account here makes it easy for you - they're all right here, whether you forget the links, need to reset the password, or preform other actions. Adding a service is simple. It will ask you for some information about said service, and once you enter it, you're done -- it's registered in the system. This is a form of administrator protection. If something happens to your admin account on any of the services you own, you will be able to reset the password after you register it here. This is a lot faster than waiting for me to come online and reinstate you, and it's easier. Chat rooms that you own on the IRC chat server can be added in my account, and it'll give you links to free java chat rooms that you can put on your account. And finally, any of your donated and approved "Air-Proxy" subdomains will also be displayed there, ready for use.
The second highlight of My Account which I'd like to bring attention to is the Wiki. A wiki is going to be the new way that documentation and information will be provided about Jcink.com related subjects. The wiki is a closed one however - you cannot just edit it right from the start. You will need approval from me in this topic. After you're approved, (if you do get approved), you can sign in to My Account. THEN visit the wiki, and you'll be able to edit pages. You can even make a wiki account if you would like as well. Remember - to edit the wiki, you always need to login from My Account on the main site first.
Finally, in this site change, a project was dropped. This project is TextfileBB. The open source dev board will be the home for this project now. You can read more about it there. I myself have dropped support for this project, and that is why you do not see it have its own project website any longer. The files are available on the link above, however, and if you were one of those who were interested in this project, I encourage you to read it and possibly join the launchpad team.
Let me know what you think about the site revamps. Hate it? Love it? Email me or post in the forums. Feedback is always welcome.

I agree about that logo. That site was kind of rushed, and I tried something totally different. Thanks though.

you can only do so much

I really like it, and My Account is a very good idea. The designs look awesome, and it just looks generally nice. Good job
Nov 8 2007, 03:59 PM
eh, its alright. can you make the website a little less wide (i find it too wide)
Nov 8 2007, 04:35 PM
No sorry, that's as small as I can make this one. I already had to shrink it a ton from its original size due to small monitors, and that's the smallest it's going to get. If you're on 800x600, you'll need to up your res, nothing I can do.

Looks great and the My Account is superb, really easy to use and everything like that
Good work mate

When it says that it wants the root admin account does mean member #1? Cause i'm member #2 cause the #1 got messed up on my board. It says wrong information. I am in the root admin group though.
Nov 8 2007, 09:19 PM
This needs member #1. If your board is damaged, ie, from a root deletion in the past, there's nothing I can do right now, and I'll work out a fix in the near future.

It says to give any feedback whether good or bad. So i'll tell my opinion.
I personally don't like the new "My Account this". I tried it out with one of my boards and you could change the password on the site. All this does is make another way into a board if someon ewanted to hack. Using the my account thing means that you would need a strong password here also. I find it too risky.
If it was that it sent an email to reset password. That would be different and MUCH better.
Well this is just my opinion.
Nov 9 2007, 01:03 AM
That's the intended use of My Account - to be able to manage stuff like passwords using a master account.
And yes, you're right - it does make another way to get into a board (or all services) via someone's master account. You could say My Account section as a whole is yet another lock and key. You do need a strong password here too if you decide to use this, even though it will lock you out if someone tries a wrong one more than 10 times an hour.
It either works against you or for you. Looking at it in a different light than what you stated about it being another way to get in, it is also yet another angle a cracker has to tackle if they want to keep you from getting your board back. That's two accounts to go after. Also, if you make your email on here something that nobody knows of, i.e., a private email account - the cracker will have a nice time even finding out what one belongs to you. That's the reason I made people login with email.
I don't understand what you mean by sending an email to do the password reset? Most of the time that never works, because once the cracker gets into a board, or the admin is tricked, or whatever, they're quick to change the email out. Not only that, from my research into cases where people get cracked... most people's email passwords stink to begin with...
However, I understand if you feel it's too risky, and I'll possibly think of ways to make it even more secure in the future. Thanks for your feedback.
In the coming months, I will see if this section actually hurts or helps people. This was done as a solution to people who need admin restoration pronto when I am not online, and also as a generally easier way for staff and me to identify who owns what boards and services easier. If it doesn't really make that much of an impact, or I find more people are attacking the master account instead of the forum accounts, I may remove the section altogether.

I've found a glitch in the my account part!
On the JFB management part where it's saying:
Management Tool: Change Root account password
There is an admin CP link. This links to something like this:
http://bbgamerforumb1.jcink.com/admin.php (Sorry for link, just for example!)
This should be fixed,
Thanks!

The My Account Thing is not showing the boards I added and when i try to re-add them it does'nt add
Jan 23 2008, 02:29 AM
I apologize but I took the feature away a while ago now off the main site, and just today erased all the added data (what little of it was there, maybe like 5 people used it...) I just didn't say anything because literally nobody used it. I don't plan on putting it back anytime soon since the concept just didn't work. It was a nice idea IMO, in theory, but the way I had it all setup, it didn't work.

I hope it can be back up sometime in the future
i Liked it
