Some down time

Aug 26 2006, 01:15 PM

Apologies: Had down time on everything from: 2am - 12 noon about.

The problem: Nothing to do with the server/cable at all, but the router.

For some reason, my interal IP address changed. It did it last night too right in the middle of something, then I switched it back right away. But I don't know why it is now doing this.

I'll see if it happens again, but I changed some settings so it shouldn't.

I don't know, but I tried to get on today and got this email:

    SiteUptime

    <system@siteuptime.com> to me

    Dear jcink,

This is an automated message from SiteUptime.

    Alert Type: Site Not Available

    Result: Failed

    Time: August 25, 2006 23:14:54 PST

    HostName/URL: 67.81.106.238

    Monitor Name: Free Jcink Hosting

So I'm not really sure. It was definitely down, though. I'll just watch it.

In the mean time, while I found it was down anyway, I took the time to update everything so I've got the latest kernel and apache updates.

Smooth sailing so far, just hope it sticks that way.

    Alright then.

  4. Jcink Says:

It happened two more times during the day. No real downtime was caused due to, I was there to fix the change.

Follow a tutorial for linux on how to give the system a static interal IP (meaning it will never change even if the system has an interruption for whatever reason) and I have done so. Now the server has it's own *static* interal IP setup away from the ones that get assigned randomly when you connect systems up.

Hopefully this will work, I've been trying this for a couple hours now and there have been 0 issues for me.

  5. Jcink Says:

    Workin' just fine I see.

  6. Sean Says:

It was just down, dunno why. DM confirmed this.

  7. Jasper Says:

SFM shutted off on me... yup.

  8. Jcink Says:

    Power surge.

My servers battery stayed on though and picked up. Router battery/brothers computer did not it turned off right away. I suppose the battery for that did not kick in to stop the surge.

    Back on though.

  9. Jcink Says:

Well the power has literally flickered on and off like 5 times now but the battery is doing great.

  10. Jasper Says:

    Good.. <_<

  11. Jcink Says:

I just got a huge surge. Power is OUT. Everything is protected though.

It's kind of wierd that you are posting when your power is out <_<

  13. Dead Midgets Says:

how long does your battery backup last? Mine lasts about 18 minutes.

  14. Jcink Says:

Not long enough to outlast this <_<

Anyway, back up again. Was about.... 4-5 hours down time? Sorry.

And once again I took time to update to the latest releases of everything on the server.

  15. Jcink Says:

Just finished a reboot. Upgraded the operating system.

  16. chewyb_13 Says:

which kind of battery backup is it, sorry if this has been asked, is it contineous or switching

  17. Jcink Says:

    This is what I use:

    http://www.amazon.com/APC-Back-UPS-ES-500-...8&s=electronics

Unfortunately, it only lasts maybe a half an hour.

In general, it was cheap, it does its job just fine, protect from a surge and a power flicker/short outage.

I suppose a UPS with a really decent amount of time, would cost around $500. But my power does not go out enough like this where it's worth buying a huge thing like that. This has basically been the first power outage for more than an hour all year.

Cheap. But unfortunately, it only lasts 0 seconds after the power has gone off.
