Affiliate System

The Affiliate mod has been added to easily allow Admins to share their affiliate buttons (usually an 88×31 minibanner) with other site's Admins to create meaningful bonds… Or at least to attempt to direct traffic to each other's site (by extension, hopefully members too.)

The affiliate system has several built in features:

  • A place to display all your link back buttons
  • A hit counter for each affiliate.
  • A section to allow members or guests to apply for affiliation (configurable by the Admin.)
  • The ability for (admin chosen) user groups to report dead or spam links.
  • Easy editing for the admin (no log in to the ACP required.)

Setting up the Affiliate system

Providing you've enabled the Affiliates system outlined here (if you haven't enabled the Affiliates system, then do that now) then:

  1. On the left panel, click: “Affiliates System”
  2. Then click: “Manage Settings”
  3. On the right panel, change: “Is the Affiliates System on?” to yes.
  4. Then set “Are you accepting new affiliates?” option to “Yes” allow members to submit affiliate requests.
  5. Next set “Require Approval” to “Yes” so that all affiliate requests must be approved by the Admin before they are posted. (This allows an admin to more easily choose who they are affiliating with.)
  6. Then in the box for “Affiliates Per Page” to a number (20 is a good default.)
  7. Then scroll to the bottom and in the “Link-us Banners Per Page” box, enter a number (5 is a decent starting number. Though it can be easily altered later if you want/need to.)
  8. Finally, click the “Submit changes” button.

Notes:

  • You can skips steps 4 and 5 if you want all affiliates to be Admin added only.
  • Don't skip steps 6 or 7 because they will cause errors in the forum if left blank.

How to add an Affiliate (Admin method)

  1. On the left side panel, click: “Affiliates System” (to expand the box where all the options are. If you've already done that, then skip this step.)
  2. Then click: “Add Affiliate”
  3. In the right panel, in the first box: enter the user id (the number you get when you click your profile link EX- “showuser=1”… The number after showuser= is what you're after.)
  4. Enter the site name in the second box.
  5. Insert the url for the website/forum in the 3rd box. (You do not need to add any HTML or BBcode tags to it. Just put the whole url in.)
  6. Enter the url for the image in the 4th box. (Like for the website's link, just put the image's link without any HTML or BBcode.)
  7. At the bottom, click “submit” and it'll be entered.

Enabling the affiliate box at the top of the page:

  1. On the left side panel, click: “Affiliates System” (to expand the box where all the options are. If you've already done that, then skip this step.)
  2. Then click: “Manage Settings”
  3. Then on the right panel, scroll down and change: “Show Global Affiliates” to yes.
  4. If you want it to scroll, then ensure that “Marquee” is set to yes. (Otherwise it will just be a static affiliate box.)
  5. Now, on the left panel, click: “Skins & Templates” (this is to expand the box where all the options are. If you've already done that, then skip this step.)
  6. Then click: “Board Wrappers”
  7. Then on the right panel, click “Edit” by the skin wrapper you want to change.
  8. Insert: <% AFFS %> under <% NAVIGATION %>
  9. Click: “Save changes” at the bottom.

Note - You will have to repeat steps 7-9 for each skin you want to have the global affilate bar displayed on. But it is extremely simple to do and only takes 10 seconds to do.

Allowing members/guests to apply for affiliation

  1. On the left panel, click: “Users and Groups” (to expand the box where all the options are. If you've already done that, then skip this step.)
  2. Then click: “Manage User Groups”
  3. On the right panel, beside the user group you want to allow affiliation request to be submitted from, click: “Edit Group”
  4. Near the bottom, under: “Affiliates System Permissions”, change: “Can this group request affiliation?” to yes.
  5. Click “Complete edit”

This group will now be able to submit applications for affiliation. (they will see a set up similar to how I've described it in “Adding an Affiliate” above.) Admins must approve or decline these manually though… To do that see the next part. Approving or Declining an Affiliate request.

Note: Underneath the group request affiliation option is “Can this group report broken links and spam?” Be sure only to set this option for those groups you trust as otherwise you may get flooded with deletion requests from guests/spambots.

Approving or Declining an Affiliate request

  1. On the left panel, click: “Affiliates System” (to expand the box where all the options are. If you've already done that, then skip this step.)
  2. Click: “Approve Affiliates”
  3. In the right panel, the page will show any/all affiliates that are pending Admin review. (It will show the: email address of the submitter, site name, site url, link to the image it's using for mini banner, and when the affiliate request was submitted.)
  4. Once you've made your decision, press the button that corresponds to your choice. (Either “Approve” to add the affiliate, or “Reject” to delete the affiliate request.)

Note - If you have the Affiliate Accepted/Denied message enabled, the user that submitted the affiliate request will be sent a personal message about it.
