The Administration Section

This section of the AdminCP houses the word filters, emoticons help files, avatar gallery and the statistics recount tool.

Word Filter

The word filter enables the admin to decide what words the system should restrict. This is useful for admins who want to filter racial slurs, insults, curse words or even whole urls.

To add a word to the word filter:

  1. On the left panel, click: “Administration”.
  2. Then click: “Manage Word Filters”.
  3. In the right panel it will display a list of words and their replacements. At the bottom, you will see 2 boxes… a Before and After. Enter the word you want changed in the “Before”, and the word you want it to become in the “After”.
  4. Now, in the drop down menu beside it choose whether you want an exact match or loose match. (A loose match will replace that word wherever it occurs. EX- if you enter “day” to be replaced with “monday” and you type “tuesday”, then it will appear as “tuesmonday”. So it's usually best to select an exact replacement only.)
  5. Once you're done, click: “Add filter”

Notes:

  1. You have a virtually unlimited number of words that can be added to the word filter. But they must be entered one at a time…
  2. You can enter website URLs in the filter (you can use loose replacement for them since they are quite specific. Plus you may want them removed if they have additional pages. EX- you can add “mywebsite.com” with a loose replacement and it'll block “mywebsite.com/coolstuff.html”) So that any spammers who try to put their website up repeatedly can be easily blocked.
  3. Any new additions to the word filters won't affect any post made before the filter is added. EX- if you enter “hi” to be replaced “Hello”, and there was a post with “hi” that was made before the filter was added, it would show still up. To have it change you can simply edit the post and click submit, changing nothing, and the word filter will kick in.

Emoticons

Emoticons are tiny graphics that are often used to show emotions (hence the name EMOTion-ICONS) in posts. (Because text alone can be very difficult to convey the exact emotion the writer is trying for.)

To add an emoticon

  1. On the left panel, click: “Administration”.
  2. Then click: “Manage Emoticons”.
  3. On the right panel, the page will display every emoticon already enabled for use on the forum.
  4. At the top of the page that displays the emoticons, enter the “Before” text.
  5. Then in the box to the right of the previous step (the one titled: “After”), enter the URL of the image that you want to become the emoticon.
  6. Then further right still, choose whether you want the image to be able to be clicked from the emoticon box in the left of the post by choosing from the drop down menu.
  7. When you're done, click: “Add Emoticon” just below the “After” text space. This will add your emoticon to the list

Notes:

  • Be careful when altering the “Before” box. As that is what you type to make the forum will display the emoticon. So if you put a word such as: “the” in that box, any location that has “the” will become that emoticon. (Though this only happens after this smiley has been set, so posts that had “the” before would be unaffected.) It is therefore advisable that you always make sure you surround your emoticons with colons. ( So the result would look similar to: :newsmiley: )
  • The average size for emoticons is 20×20 pixels. Though the custom ones can be larger.

To change the image of the emoticon

  1. On the left panel, click: “Administration”.
  2. Then click: “Manage Emoticons”.
  3. On the right panel, the page will display every emoticon already enabled for use on the forum.
  4. Beside the emoticon you want to change, click: “Edit”.
  5. In the page that loads you'll see a box for the “Before” text and the “After” result. Change the link in the “After” box to one of your choosing.
  6. (Optional) if you want to make the emoticon clickable (so you can just click it from the left side of the post.) Then change the ”+ Clickable” to “Yes”
  7. When you're finished, click “Edit Emoticon” button to save the changes.

Note:

  • Any emoticons that were posted before their image changed will still use the old image in those posts. The new emoticon image will only take effect in new posts or if the old is edited.

To remove an emoticon

  1. On the left panel, click: “Administration”.
  2. Then click: “Manage Emoticons”.
  3. On the right panel, the page will display every emoticon already enabled for use on the forum.
  4. On the right panel, scroll down until you find the emoticon you want to remove, beside it click the “remove” link.

Note:

  • You will not receive a confirmation page if you click the “remove” link. The emoticon will simply be removed.
  • Any emoticons removed will only prevent new users from adding that emotion. Any old posts using it will still have it unless they are edited.
